Yesterday was Steve's 42nd birthday. Since it was also Labor Day, he didn't have to work, which was really nice.
Celebrating Steve's birthday is always a bit of a challenge. He doesn't like much fuss and this year he particularly didn't want to do much since he's worried about tiring me. He has always done such a good job of making me feel special on my birthday and other days, so I try really hard to do things that will make him feel special, too. He's just so darn resistant to it! *smile* For days before his birthday, I would ask him what he wanted to do on his birthday. I gave him carte blanche. I got nothing back. I didn't want to make him do anything he didn't want to do, but I also didn't want to just ignore the fact that it was birthday. He finally gave in and we went fishing. Poor guy. I forced him to go fishing on his birthday. *smile*
He's been wanting to go to this lake he drives by on his way to work, so we went there. It was a great lake with lots of fishing spots. The weather started out really nice, too. It was cloudy and cool. After a little bit, it started to rain. Fortunately, I have a way awesome camp chair with an umbrella, so I was able to stay pretty dry while reading. Steve had a rain jacket so he stayed relatively dry while fishing. The dog was the only one who didn't have cover and she let us know her pain. She would stand as close to me as possible and whine. She can be such a diva. The rain cleared up and the sun came out. No more coolness, it became way too warm. My umbrella helped shade me, but Steve wasn't as lucky. We had some shade near us but it wasn't much. We finally packed up and headed out since he wasn't catching anything. Except the dog, that is. One time, just as he was about to cast his line into the lake, Sadie snuck up behind him and he hooked her. As big a diva as she can be, she didn't even whimper once while he worked to get it out. Luckily, it hit her on her shoulder instead of her face and it didn't go deep.
When we returned home, I started making Steve's birthday dinner. I told him he could have whatever he wanted for dinner - we could go out anywhere he wanted or I'd make him anything he wanted. He requested the same thing as last year - meatloaf, mashed potatoes, corn on the cob, and cheesecake instead of birthday cake. Last year, I muffed up the cheesecake, as you can read about here, so I made sure that the spring form pan was set-up right and it actually made it in to the oven without a problem. I was soooo pleased. However, I've decided that Steve's birthday is cursed food-wise. I started working on the meatloaf, sauteing the veggies and mixing the stuff that seasons the meat. I went to get the meat out of the fridge and didn't see it. Steve had gone grocery shopping while I was at church on Sunday, so I hadn't been the one to put away the food. I finally found the meat in the freezer - solid as a rock! I couldn't believe it. It hadn't occurred to me at all to see if the meat was in the fridge. Steve and I had a good laugh about it and headed to dinner at Buffalo Wild Wings - yes, that's what Steve chose from all the restaurants in the world. We both ordered chicken sandwiches but when our food came we both had hamburgers! The waitress felt really bad (she's new) and the manager offered us free dessert or a discount on our food. They all felt worse about it than we did, we just laughed about Steve's cursed birthday. Since we had cheesecake at home, we opted for the discount, so it turned out quite nicely for us after all; we just had to wait a bit longer than normal to get our dinner.
The cheesecake turned out great, thank heavens! We'll be eating it all week since Steve didn't want to take any to work with him today to share with his coworkers. Next year, I'm determined to get both the meatloaf (or whatever else he wants) and the dessert to go well! Or, maybe we'll just go out to eat again.
I learned my lesson from last year and spent more time with Steve on his birthday. Next year, my goal besides getting him dinner perfect is to let him do whatever he wants on his birthday even if that is nothing.
I'm kind of glad his birthday is over. I kind of worried that our baby would be born on Steve's birthday, which everyone else seemed to think was cool but I really didn't want it. I want them to both have their own days to celebrate. So, I'm glad the day has passed and the baby didn't come. Now, he can come any time he's ready and it will be fine with me..
