I found the directions for these reversible placemats here. My goal was to finish them before having a baby. Steve and I picked out the fabric last August but I didn't finish them until January...after Christmas, unfortunately. I needed my mom's help and didn't get a chance to work with her on them until mid-December when I went and helped her after her arm surgery. She walked me through cutting them out because I didn't understand how to do it on my small cutting board. When I got home, I finished cutting them out and pinned them. After Christmas, I finally sewed them and we sent them to Ron and Janie. I'm glad they were so patient and understanding about getting a late present!
This is really a simple project and I know I'll get better at them as I do more. It was fun picking out fabric with Steve for his parents and the two choices he made for his dad were ones I would never have thought to put together but that ended up looking really good. I definitely need to learn to think outside the box a little when picking out coordinating fabric. I like that each placemat is reversible so you can choose which side you want, giving you more decorating options.
In all, I think the total cost of these 4 placemats was around $25, so fairly similar to ones you'd be find in the store but better because they're personalized. I definitely want to make more!
