Last week, Steve and I said goodbye to a member of our family......our living room furniture set.
Steve had owned the living room set for almost 10 years. Don't ask me how it fit in the tiny apartment he lived in when we first met - I think magic was involved. It definitely took up the entire space, along with his extremely large TV. Moving it into our new home took some effort. Both the sofa and love seat have recliners built-in to them, adding quite a bit of weight. The love seat was especially heavy because all those extra recliner parts were crammed into a smaller area. Once inside, though, the furniture fit our living room quite nicely, and we've enjoyed sitting on it. It's pretty comfortable and old enough that we didn't mind our dog getting up on it IF we invited her first.
Last Tuesday, my youngest brother Kevin came with his boss and a big trailer and took our furniture. Before they arrived, Steve took apart the set to make it easier to carry. I wish I would have taken a picture of all the pieces hanging out in our living room because that would have made it easier to explain. The sofa and love seat have removable backs and the center console is detachable from them both. Basically, instead of one big piece, or even two or three big pieces, there were 10 smaller pieces. The love seat and sofa were still quite heavy, but just not as heavy as if their backs were still attached. After Kevin left, Steve said how happy he was that Kevin's boss had been there to help since Kevin and his boss did most of the heavy lifting. All Steve did was carry some of the backs. I helped a little until Steve chastised me for carrying something heavier than a feather while pregnant. I didn't point out that my school backpack weighs more than one of those backs. Instead, I kept the dog company while she freaked out because she so desperately wanted Kevin to pet her.
I'm really glad that Kevin is taking the furniture. He and his family are moving into a new home and could use larger furniture. We're getting new furniture in a couple weeks (more on that later) and had planned on donating the furniture to a thrift store until we happened to mention that fact to Kevin and his wife when they were visiting a couple weeks ago. They asked how much we would sell the furniture, I named a ridiculous amount, being a big sister that believes in teasing, before saying those words that are music to any buyer's ears, "For Free". They agreed on the amount and a deal was made. Luckily, Kevin was coming to the Salt Lake area for a work training and luckily his boss agreed to make an hour-long detour to our house to pick up the furniture. Don't you love it when things turn out so nicely?
Since our furniture won't arrive until Easter, we brought down Steve's much-loved easy chair from the guest room upstairs where it was rarely used, much to Steve's chagrin. Since that seats one and we are two, I suggested bringing down the extra mattress in the computer room and pile pillows on it for the person not in the easy chair. It's not a pretty set-up, but it will work for the next few weeks. Guess who really loves the new furniture - once she got used to the change, that is? Sadie. Then next morning, I found her sprawled out on the mattress like she owned it. Unfortunately for her, we've started leaning it up against the wall so she can't sleep on it because she nests and scratched the heck out of the sheet and mattress pad! Sigh.
I'll be glad when we get our new furniture. Just two and a half more weeks!
