My little baby is 6-months old! Half a year. Where is the time going? Everyone tells me to enjoy this time because it goes by so quickly, and I totally believe it. And, I am enjoying this time. It's hard, but Matt is so much fun that the work is so worth it.
Here's what Matt is up to lately:
* Sitting up. He sits up all by himself for quite a long period of time. He still falls over occasionally, so I put pillows behind him and to his side; however, most of the time he doesn't need them. He can even pick up toys and play with them while he sits.
* Rolling. Matt rolls from his stomach to his back easy-peasy, and this past week he rolled from his stomach to his back for the first time! Now he does it easily, too. As he rolls, he moves around and can cover quite a bit of ground. We're starting to baby-proof our house and making plans to do more so that once he starts to crawl, we'll be ready. Hopefully, we have a few weeks before he starts to crawl!
* Eskimo kisses. I've been giving Matt Eskimo kisses since he was born, but lately he's been getting a real kick out of them. He giggles every time...it's sooooo cute!
* Laughing. Speaking of giggling, Matt is laughing more and more. He is such a happy dude and finds so many things to be funny. He loves when his daddy pants like a dog, gives him kisses on his cheek, and lifts him way high. His laugh is so dang cute and could make even the grumpiest mommy smile. :)
* Peek-a-boo. I've been playing peek-a-boo with Matt since he was about a month old. About two months ago, he started thinking it was fun and would giggle when I did it. Now, he's doing it! He'll put a blanket over his face and as soon as I say, "Where's Matt?" he quickly pulls the blanket down and smiles when I say "Peek-a-boo!" At first I thought it was a fluke, but he does it all the time. It's pretty dang cute.
* Going for walks. I'm so glad the weather is turning warmer. I finally feel comfortable taking him for walks in the evening with Steve and Sadie, unless it's raining or snowing. Matt does fairly well on our walks, but sometimes he gets fussy towards the end and wants to get out of his stroller. If his pacifier doesn't do its job, Steve will pick him up and carry him the rest of the way as long as we're fairly close to home. What a nice daddy! I wonder what Matt thinks about the world. We've been shut up inside most of his life, I bet it's fascinating to him to see all the sights. I can't wait to take him to the zoo and other places this summer!
* Eating. He's doing really well with eating solids now. It was a slow start, but he's eating like a champ now. His favorite food so far is carrots. He gobbles them up! The first time we gave him carrots was the first time he finished the portion of food we had dished up for him. He ate half a jar! I think he might have eaten the whole jar if I would have let him. Now, he eats half the jar pretty regularly for all flavors. He has liked all the flavors we've given him so far; I alternate between fruits and veggies. We've been giving him solids once a day, but now that we're at six months, our doctor said we can start giving him 2 meals of solids a day if we feel he's ready.
* Church. Last Sunday, I took Matt to church for the first time since his blessing. He loved flirting with all the ladies in Relief Society and smiled big for the guy next to us in Sunday School. He didn't make it to Sacrament meeting (it's last in our ward), but I think the outing went well and am looking forward to taking him most every week.
* Sleeping. He slept fairly well for awhile, but then started to wake up in the middle of the night to roll around and play in his crib. He wasn't fussy, was just having a grand time, laughing and playing. We recently changed his eating and napping schedule, and it has helped at night...at least the few nights since the change. In fact, the first night, he slept from 9pm to 6:30am! It was so unusual that I kept waking up to make sure he was alive. Dang it!
* Pulling hair. He loves to pull my hair and it comforts him when he's sad or going to sleep. It became easier for him to pull my hair once I cut it to my chin and can't pull it back in a pony tail any more. :)
* Touching things. And putting them into his mouth. He takes a lot more interest in objects around him. He loves to feel different textures. At church last week, I stood by the door in Sunday School when he got fussy and he loved to feel the brick wall. He also enjoys the quilt on our bed - it has a lot of different colors and patterns. It's fun to watch him explore everything. One of his favorite things to do is to look in the mirror and to whack it. If he's ornery, we'll stand with him in front of a mirror and it makes him happier.
* Dancing. This is a very recent development. When he hears music, he starts bopping up and down, "dancing" to the music. Sometimes he'll do it when I sing to him, but mostly it's to music from his toys or the tv.
His favorite toys currently are Bo, a stuffed dog Grandma Susan gave him for Christmas that sings and talks; a camera that Jorg, Sandra, and Audrina gave him for Christmas that lights up and plays music; and his old favorites Gerald the giraffe, Mr. Froggy, and the butterflies.
At his 6-month well-check appointment yesterday, Matt weighed 22.6 lbs and measured 28" tall. He's a healthy boy, and Lt. McGovern, Matt's doctor, says she's very happy with his development and health. Yay!
