This was about as perfect a weekend as one can get without having died and gone to heaven. It was definitely just what I needed after spending over a week in Canada followed by a very busy week of work and school.
Friday after work, I got home to find dinner almost finished. My husband spoils me! He had made Parmesan crusted chicken breasts and a nice veggied-filled salad. It was delicious! After dinner, we packed a few things in the car and headed a few miles south to a little lake in Farmington for fishing. Before that, though, we searched all over our house for our fishing licenses before concluding that they were probably close to expiring anyway and we might as well go buy new ones. It's always smart to obey the laws. We had been at the lake about 30 minutes before we saw a fish and game warden checking licenses. So comforting to know our new licenses were in my bag between our chairs. We didn't catch anything, but it felt wonderful to be outside in the coolness of the evening, in nature, just the two of us...and Sadie. Sigh. She was a pain that night. She decided that she just had to be petted all the time. Usually she's pretty good at being lazy on her blanket or even exploring a little (we put her on a "rope" which gives her limited room to explore), but that night she was really needy. After fishing, we picked up fresh fruit shakes at Burger Barn then went home to watch Agatha Christie's "Miss Marple".
Saturday, I woke up early, walked the dog, made eggs and toast for breakfast, showered, got ready, and headed to my hair appointment by 9am. I hadn't had my hair done since December, so it felt really nice to pamper myself a bit. I've struggled to find a hair stylist up here that I like, but this gal was really good. I'll definitely go back to her. We chatted a bit, but I also felt comfortable being silent at times. When she washed my hair, she massaged my head for a few minutes and I thought I really had died and gone to heaven. I am now blonde again and really love the color. I'm ready for Summer.
When I got home, Steve had cleaned out the garage and cleaned our front patio area. I washed all our glass sliding doors after eating an easy lunch of salad and leftover chicken. We played a couple games then went shopping. I needed a few toiletries and he needed new pants, a shirt, and a tie for an upcoming job fair and interviews that are hopefully in the near future. We also did a little bit of maternity shopping for me since my pants are finally getting to the point where they're almost uncomfortable and the couple maternity pants I have are still way too big for me. I bought an awesome summer dress (which I'm wearing right now) and some maternity shorts that actually fit me. We also looked at baby furniture but we're still waiting until this week's appointment before we start buying things.
For dinner, I was craving nachos. I've been craving nachos for about two months. I've tried satisfying that craving by eating at this really good Baja Mexican restaurant (that doesn't have nachos but really good flautas) but the craving has persisted. Steve finally convinced me to order nachos in Montreal after seeing them on every menus. I didn't want to because I didn't believe I could get the nachos I wanted in Canada...especially since we never ate at an actual Mexican restaurant. I was right. The nachos were horrible and did nothing to satisfy my craving. Steve and I don't normally go to Cafe Rio but we went there for dinner on Saturday, and I finally had my nacho craving satisfied. Mmmm. They were delicious! Right after dinner we went fishing again, this time at a little area in Kaysville that has a couple ponds right by each other. We were a little late in getting there, so all the good spots were taken, but we finally found a place and hunkered down. Steve had given me a Mother's Day present early so I could use it that night - a really spiffy camp chair that has an attached foot rest and an umbrella that can move around so you can block the sun from practically any angle. It was really comfortable. We didn't catch a fish that night either, but we both almost did. When I got a nibble on my line, I pulled too quickly, not giving the fish the chance to swallow the hook, so it got away. Again, though, it just felt great to be outside, relaxing with my hubby...without the dog this time! When we got home, we watched an episode of Eureka on Netflix then went to bed.
Sunday morning, Steve let me sleep in while he walked the dog. When he woke me up, he brought in my other Mother's Day presents. One was a white rose that my dad had asked Steve to pick up for me from him. The other was a gift bag with three items: a red checkered picnic tablecloth, tablecloth holders in the shape of watermelon slices (you clip the tablecloth to the picnic table so it doesn't blow around), and picnic utensils that look like Swiss army knives but have a full-sized spoon, fork, knife, cork screw, and bottle opener. I'm totally ready for a picnic now! Who wants to have one with me?
We hurried and dressed then went to our favorite breakfast place. It's a down-home country type joint that is perfect for breakfast. After eating a delicious meal, we rushed home and got ready for church. Steve went to church with me for Mother's Day! It felt great walking hand-in-hand to church with him. He looked so handsome. Church was really nice and all the speakers did wonderfully. We had leftovers for lunch then Steve took a really long nap while I relaxed. For dinner we had crockpot BBQ country-style pork ribs and corn on the cob. I made chocolate chip cookies. I used to hate making cookies but it has become one of my favorite activities. Something about sitting in the kitchen waiting for the timer to go off, the smell of fresh cookies, and sampling the cookie dough. It's all wonderful. The cookies turned out great! When the sun finally went down and it became cooler, Steve set up our croquet set and we played a few games of croquet. It was a lot of fun.
It was such a nice, relaxing weekend! I feel energized and ready for the week ahead!
