Steve and I celebrate birthdays in a very low-key manner. Neither of us are big on celebrating our own birthdays but would probably like to celebrate the other person's birthday in a bigger manner, but we respect the other person's wishes enough not to do anything too lavish.
I think I've rubbed off on Steve just a little when it comes to celebrating birthdays. I like to add little touches when we celebrate his birthday, like a banner saying Happy Birthday and balloons. Yesterday, I came home from work and class to find this scene awaiting me: (sorry for the dark picture...I'm a horrible photographer)

There was also a big present sitting on the counter with the little hat-shaped confetti strewn all over. I don't know why I didn't get a picture of the present. Ah well. It was really sweet and thoughtful, just like my husband.
He had me sit down in the living room while he brought in the big, heavy present. Thankfully, he didn't bonk me on the head with it (my family's tradition) and just sat it at my feet, along with cards from his parents and my dad. I opened the cards first then turned to the present. As I started to unwrap it, our dog Sadie came over to see what was going on. To our surprise and delight, she started helping me unwrap the present! She would grab a piece of wrapping paper in her mouth and pull it until it came off. Then she'd move to another piece. She has never done this before - it was so cute!
I opened the big box to find what looked like a small piece of luggage. It was green and the fabric looked like luggage fabric. Oh, and there was a dolly-like thing that really made me think it was luggage. Steve told me I was wrong and to look inside the compartments. I opened the largest compartment, the zipper being on top, and discovered what looked like a cooler, so I thought it was just a really nice, fancy cooler. Nope. Steve told me to keep looking. So, I opened the front zipper. I discovered plastic plates, goblets, cloth napkins, silverware, a mini cutting board, a small knife, a cork screw, and little miniature salt and pepper shakers! It's a picnic basket! I literally screamed with delight. I have always wanted a picnic basket!!

With all the picnic items he gave me for Mother's Day, I am set to go on a picnic! I can't wait. If we don't end up being able to go to Cedar for Memorial Day weekend, I totally want to go on a picnic. With my new picnic basket. Sigh. I couldn't be happier.
Once I thanked him over and over again, giving him lots of hugs and kisses, we headed to dinner since we were both starving. We usually eat lots earlier than this - it was 6:30! Yeah, we're old fogies. *smile* Steve had said I could go anywhere I wanted, but I really struggled to think of somewhere that I really like but that we don't go to all the time. He suggested a restaurant at the Ogden airport that we ate at once and really liked and I agreed. It's a steakhouse. We both ordered small prime ribs and they were sooooo good. I love a good prime rib. Mmm. It was really nice that they offer the prime ribs in a small size, 8 oz, so not only did we not get too much food but it was also really well-priced. Yay! I ate a good amount but definitely left room for dessert since I knew we had cake waiting at home!
We got home around 7:30 and walked Sadie. It was the perfect weather for walking; warm but a little overcast so not too hot. It sprinkled on us for about 30 seconds, which felt kind of nice. When we got home, Steve had me sit in the living room while he lit the candles on the cake (which he had arranged to say "36"). He brought it in to me while he sang "Happy Birthday".

I made a wish and blew out the candles with one blow. We both had big slices; he gave me one with a big flower on top because he knows me so well. It was vanilla cake with butter cream frosting and it was tasty!
The rest of the night, we watched tv and relaxed. It was quiet and very, very enjoyable.
Thank you, everyone, for the birthday wishes! It was a great birthday!
