This week, I decided to start walking around campus instead of around the school's indoor track. Ideally, I'd like to be able to walk around the outdoor track, so I can still be outside but not have to think about where I'm going. Unfortunately, it isn't open to the public like SUU's track. I made this decision despite the rain that has fallen the past few days...or maybe because of it? It's been so nice and cool, but not too cold with my jacket, that walking outside feels invigorating.
Today, I walked the outer northern edge of campus, a route I had never taken before. Walking west, I had a great view of the city below. Above me, the sky mixed white clouds, storm clouds, and brilliant blue hues, making me wish I either could paint it or take a decent picture of it. I could do neither, so I just enjoyed it. Maybe someday the memory of that sky will come back from the depths of my mind. I turned and headed south for a bit, then turned again, now going east. Looming ahead of and over me were the beautiful mountains, green with Spring growth and capped by ever-darkening storm clouds. Just as I wondered if it was going to rain on me without my rain jacket or umbrella, the sun broke free from whatever cloud had hidden it temporarily. It was a neat juxtaposition - the sun shining warmly upon me while I watched the storm clouds gather over the mountains.
Don't get me started on the smell! Ah, the smell of a rainy Spring day is heavenly! WSU has a beautiful campus with lush green grass, a variety of flowers planted everywhere, and trees that bloom and smell as sweet as any flower. Mix all those earthy smells with the passing (and imminent) rain and you get an intoxicating scent.
It was a short walk, just 30 minutes, but it felt oh so good, both physically and emotionally. My body is definitely slowing down, getting heavier every day it seems. I feel the weight sometimes and it makes me want to lay down and do nothing. Today's walk reminded my body that it loves to move, even with the added weight and the weird balance shift that comes from having a growing belly.
I'm thankful for my Mom for instilling in me a love of walking. It's that love that got me outside today so I could experience all that I did on my walk, even though I didn't really want to go for a walk today but sit inside. I'm so glad I went for that walk!
